In
2008, Green Corps celebrates 15 years of training a new generation of
young people in the skills and strategies of grassroots environmental
organizing.
The 200-plus emerging leaders we’ve trained since
1992 got a solid education in environmental organizing from seasoned
environmental leaders and trainers. And while they learned, they made a
difference. Through Green Corps’ partnerships with 75 environmental
organizations, trainees have provided critical field support to more
than 100 campaigns, winning dozens of significant victories in
conservation, corporate accountability, and public health.
And
for most Green Corps graduates, that was just the beginning. Armed with
tactical and strategic expertise in grassroots organizing, Green Corps
graduates have gone on to build the power of the environmental
movement, as Green Corps’ founders hoped they would.
Fanning out
across a wide spectrum of organizations and campaigns, Green Corps
alumni have activated and motivated citizens to successfully hold
powerful institutions accountable for the future of our environment and
our nation. Our graduates have conceived and spearheaded organizing
strategies in forums ranging from local government to corporate
boardrooms to presidential races. They’ve lent their passion and skill
to groups of all sizes doing community organizing, internet organizing,
shareholder activism, communications strategy, direct advocacy, and
more.
For
the broader environmental movement, however, success is not yet
assured. Over the next 10 years, environmental organizations have an
ambitious agenda: combating the dismantling of environmental
protections, advancing bold new ideas to organize our society in
harmony with our environment, and engaging and re-engaging the
public—the key constituency that will carry the movement to victory.
Green Corps remains committed to training a new generation of
grassroots organizers to tackle these challenges.
