Stopping Ocean Dumping
When Oceana wanted to convince Royal Caribbean cruise line to stop ocean dumping, they looked to Green Corps to make it happen. Cruise ships are floating cities with populations in the thousands. They produce hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage which is then released into some of the world's most pristine ocean environments, killing marine life and coral. To make matters worse, cruise ships are exempt from key provisions of the Clean Water Act, the nation’s preeminent water pollution control law. Since no ocean water quality standards have been set for waters three miles or more from shore, discharges from cruise ships are largely unmonitored and unregulated. Partnering with Oceana to launch its Stop Cruise Pollution campaign, Green Corps organizers worked in Maine, California, Illinois, Florida, Louisiana, and Massachusetts to generate public pressure on Royal Carribbean, one of the most profitable and polluting cruise lines in the industry, to clean up its fleet of ships. In Los Angeles, Green Corps organizer Jesse Littlewood held a massive media event for the campaign at the Santa Monica pier, bringing together speakers from Environment California, Surfrider Foundation, and Heal the Bay. Jesse's event was picked up by the Associated Press and was featured in over 40 local and national media outlets, including The New York Times and The Boston Globe. In just a few months, Jesse and his fellow organizers were able to recruit hundreds of volunteers, generate a flood of public comments to Royal Caribbean CEO Richard Fein, and build national visibility for the campaign. Due to the efforts of Green Corps organizers working on behalf of Oceana and the public pressure that it generated, Royal Caribbean agreed to install pollution control technology on all of its ships. |
