Green Corps organizer Claire Miller working with students in Maryland to demand action on global warming

Md. students want green plan October 10, 2007 Philadelphia Examiner By Sara Michael A group of Maryland college students want the University System of Maryland to reduce pollution and offset the schools’ impact on the environment. “We’re rising to the challenge and confronting the threat of global warming,” said Erica Stout, co-founder of the newly formed Maryland Student Climate Coalition and Towson sophomore, standing in Federal Hill Park on an unusually warm autumn day Tuesday. The group, which includes students from most of the system’s 11 universities, plans in mid-December to present the Board of Regents, the colleges’ governing board, with a policy to become carbon neutral, which means reducing carbon emissions where possible and offsetting emissions with green technologies. Students met last weekend to plan the campaign, and are collecting petition signatures to deliver to the board, said Andrew Nazdin, co-founder of the Maryland Student Climate Coalition. The plan would include conducting an energy audit and using clean energy sources. A carbon neutral plan is expected to be met with support. A few schools have pledged to reduce their carbon footprint, and Chancellor William Kirwan named environmental initiatives among his top priorities for the system to pursue over the next few years, said University System of Maryland spokesman John Buettner. “The question isn’t whether to reduce carbon footprint, it’s about how and what measures have to be taken in a calculated plan to do it,” he said, adding that the chancellor’s plan hasn’t been finalized. Holding signs urging action on global warming, the students joined members of the Maryland chapter of the Sierra Club and Episcopal Diocese of Maryland to urge state politicians to take “a radical approach” to tackling the causes and effects of global warming. “We no longer have the luxury of small steps,” said Lee Walker-Oxenham, political chairwoman for the Howard County chapter of the state’s Sierra Club. The groups want Gov. Martin O’Malley to pledge to reduce greenhouse gases by 80 percent by 2050, promote conservation efforts and dedicate transportation money to public transit, Walker-Oxenham said. In April, O’Malley established the Commission on Climate Change, and recommendations for addressing climate change are due in November.

Green Corps Class of 2008 member Josh Jones writes about his experience fighting global warming in Illinois

Moving on & moving up: Success is worth the hard work 12 hour days are welcome when goals are met, friendships made November 14, 2007 By: Josh Jones **Editor's Note: For the next year the Mirror will chronicle the lives of three recent Drury graduates as they move from college life into the real world. This week's story was written by Josh Jones who graduated in May 2007 with a degree in Marketing. Jones is now working for the Green Corps as a campaign organizer.** I've been working in Chicago with Environment Illinois now for the last three weeks. My task: to build the grassroots and grasstops support necessary to pass strong global warming legislation in Illinois, and to soak up my time with three awesome Green Corps coworkers/roommates. I'm a pretty lucky guy. James, Rob, Emily and I are sharing a spacious two bedroom, one bath apartment just a few minutes' walk off the Montrose stop on the Blue-line. We joke around about it being 'the commune.' And in many ways it is. But it's not all fun and games, we're busting our butts (12 hour days or seven day weeks are not uncommon) to pass legislation that would set a mandatory limit on global warming pollution from power plants and industrial facilities, and a clean car standard to cut pollution from the automobile fleet by 30%. The job, on a day to day basis, requires a great deal of communication/persuasion, flat out drive, and detailed organization (see planning out your next week's schedule by the hour). We're using a variety of tactics (coalition building, media, grassroots pressure, grasstops organizing) to pass the aforesaid legislation. This week I'm co-organizing a news conference with my roommate Rob. I'm glad to say two area Senators are speaking at our conference, which is hopefully indicative of the direction of the changing political landscape here in Illinois and around the country. Needless to say it still feels strange to be 'prepping' a senator for a news conference. My final hurrah in Chicago will fall on the last week of the campaign. I'm organizing a town hall meeting over global warming, and in my dreams this is how the event would play out: Over 100 people would crowd into the slightly undersized room. The area's representatives and senators, who are crowded in amongst their constituents, would at that moment realize the importance of not only backing, but championing strong global warming legislation. The event would leave local community members impassioned about global warming, ready for sustained action around the issue. Small events would scatter the calendar for the next two months as the communities stay organized around the issue, ready to ensure the vote goes in the right direction. I'm upset I won't have the opportunity to see this campaign through to its vote in the capitol and upset I won't be able to celebrate that evening with all the community members who've helped make its passing a reality.

Green Corps organizer Ruth Morrison held an old car show in Virginia to call on Congress to raise U.S. fuel-economy standards

Carytown event urges improving gas mileage November 2, 2007 Richmond Times Dispatch By Greg Edwards Environmental activists held an old-car show yesterday across from the Byrd Theatre in Carytown to draw attention to a bill in Congress to raise U.S. fuel-economy standards. The show was intended to demonstrate that federal mileage requirements for the U.S. vehicles are much the same today as they were in the 1970s. The event was timely as the average price of gasoline in the Richmond area has jumped in 2and 3-cent increments this week. A gallon of regular sells for $2.75 per gallon, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic, compared with $2.06 per gallon the same time last year. "When Americans see oil prices reach such record highs, it's not only fair but necessary for them to ask Congress to step up and give them better standards," said Jay Johnson, the chairwoman of the Virginia Organizing Project. Congress is considering an energy bill that includes a provision that would raise the average fuel economy requirement for the U.S. auto fleet to 35 miles per gallon. There's no reason Americans cannot have improved gas mileage, said Glen Besa of the Sierra Club. He joined other speakers in urging the public to contact their representatives in Congress and urge them to support the improved standards. The Senate version of the energy bill contains the provision to improve gas mileage and the House version does not. A conference committee will resolve those differences with final action expected by Christmas, said Ruth Morrison, a field organizer for the National Environmental Trust. Turner Smith brought his 1964 Citroen Deux Chevaux, to the event. The tiny car, which gets roughly 50 miles per gallon, was designed as an economical and rugged form of transportation for the French farmer, the story goes. "I've always been concerned about mileage," said Smith who owned a Dodge Dart in 1973 and a diesel Volkswagen Rabbit, which got 50 miles per gallon, in 1979.

Green Corps organizer Ruth Morrison organizes community event around IPCC climate change report

Experts speak on climate change They urge the use of more renewable energy to save coastal areas. November 18, 2007 Dailypress.com BY AUSTIN BOGUES NORFOLK — - Jay Taylor isn't worried about people inventing a way to protect themselves from the effects of global climate change. He just wants them to pick up the tools to do it. He fears what could happen if the problem goes on. Taylor and other experts predict that over the next century the sea level might rise 2 to 3 feet in Hampton Roads. Taylor serves on the board of directors for Wetlands Watch, a conservation group dedicated to the preservation of wetlands. At a discussion Saturday hosted by the National Environmental Trust, Taylor addressed a handful of people at the Five Points Community Farmers Market at MacArthur Center. Strategically placed near a skating rink, they discussed the topic, "Is Virginia on Thin Ice?" The presentation was made along with Emmett Duffy, a professor at the Virginia Institute for Marine Science in reaction to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The group recently shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. "The Hampton Roads region is one of the most at-risk coastal areas for flooding resulting from a rise in sea levels," Duffy said, adding that millions of people could be displaced. The two stressed that a dramatic rise would affect not only the areas that we are able to live, but also the industries that keep the region afloat. Taylor said historical sites like Jamestown could be eradicated. "The oldest cities of Virginia are along the coast, along the rivers, the areas that are most prone to flooding and loss," Taylor said. "It would directly impact us economically because of our dependence on tourism." Taylor said the ultimate challenge is not to invent new technologies, but to have the political force to enact change. He applauded recent efforts of Sen. John Warner, R-Va., for the America's Climate Security Act bill he is sponsoring. Taylor and Duffy both said the rise can be curbed by using energy more efficiently. "The good news is that we already know about how to fix this problem," Duffy said. "We know how to do renewable energy, we know how to increase fuel efficiency in cars, we know how to do smart growth and public transportation." Duffy said climate change could affect what foods end up on our plates. He noted that submerged grasses in the Chesapeake Bay could die out from an elevation in temperature. "Blue crabs spend their early life stages in these sea grass beds," Duffy said. Both said some sea level rise is inevitable but that it can be kept from becoming worse. WORLD A U.N. panel warns of human suffering and species extinction due to climate change. A22
