Green Corps Class of 2012 Bios:
Harry Alper, Washington University in St. Louis
Harry majored in Anthropology at Washington
University in St. Louis where he worked with fellow students to challenge
the university's ties with the coal industry and supported community members
fighting a coal ash landfill. He was a Steering Committee member for his
school’s Wilderness Project, a backpacking program for incoming students. Harry
has instructed sea kayaking, built a passive solar cob cottage with House
Alive, and worked as a Clean Air - Cool Planet Climate Fellow at The Seacoast
Science Center in Rye, New Hampshire.
Charlotte Bartter, The College of William &
Mary
Charlotte double majored in Kinesiology/Health
Sciences and Environmental Sciences at The College of William & Mary. She
served as the President of the women's club lacrosse team and Vice-President of
Community Service for Kappa Delta Sorority.Charlotte was an event coordinator for the Inaugural Run for the Dream half
marathon that benefitted the non-profits An Achievable Dream and Wounded
Warriors. She also participated in a study abroad program at the
National University of Ireland, Galway.
Katie Barzee, Duke University
At Duke, Katie studied Earth and Ocean Sciences
while minoring in Environmental Science and Policy and French Studies. She
interned at Oregon Conservation Network, Yadkin Riverkeeper and at McCall
Environmental Law Firm. Katie worked extensively on water quality testing
during her time as a research assistant.
Alexandra Beautyman, Yale University
Alexandra majored in Physics and Philosophy at
Yale. She was an intern for Loop Environmental Solutions in India, where she
worked on institutional sustainability consulting and eco-product distribution.
Alexandra developed a method for tracking micron-sized particles in three
dimensions in the Yale Soft Matter Lab. She was also the co-Editor-in-Chief of
Yale Undergraduate Magazine and was on the ultimate frisbee women’s team.
Ali Blumenstock, Bucknell University
While at Bucknell, Ali majored in Environmental
Studies with a minor in Spanish and International Relations. She interned at
the Bucknell Environmental Center as well as the Academy of Natural Sciences.
Ali was the president of Bucknell’s Environmental Club, a student
representative of the Campus Greening Council, and an executive board member
for Bicycles against Poverty.
Charlie Furman, University of Southern California
Charlie majored in Cinema Studies at the University
of Southern California. While in LA, Charlie interned for Black Valley Films
and the LA County Bicycle Coalition. He volunteered
at the Bike Oven and with the Los Angeles Burrito Project. On campus, he was President of USC for
Alternative Transportation and part of USC's Coalition for a Safer Campus and
Community. Throughout college Charlie also coached the Ridge High School debate
team.
Emma Greenbaum, American University
Emma received an Economics and Interdisciplinary
Studies degree from American University. She interned at ActionAid U.S. as well
as the Casa de la Paz in Santiago, Chile. She was the president of American
University’s Trade Justice as well as the president of the all-female a
cappella group, Treble in Paradise.
Alistair Hall, Vassar College
Alistair majored in Urban Studies with
concentrations in Economics and Geography. While interning at Smart Growth
America, he launched a campaign to educate legislators on Smart Growth by
interviewing leaders of sustainable development projects. In his spare time,
Alistair was the captain of the
Vassar College Men's Swim
and Dive Team and sat on a number of
student committees, ranging from representing student-athletes to helping
organize his school's 150th anniversary.
Eleni Healey, Wesleyan University
Eleni graduated from Wesleyan with degrees in
Environmental Studies and American Studies. Last summer she received a
Davenport Grant to research the maple sugar industry. Eleni interned as a
public defense investigator at both Georgetown Law School Criminal Defense
Clinic as well as Orleans Public Defenders. She was a plaintiff in Hanson v.
Rumsfeld, which challenged the NYCLU Department of Defense’s illegal use of
minors’ personal information for military recruitment. Eleni has also produced
two radio shows that were aired over her local radio station.
Emily Heffling, Michigan State University
Emily studied Political Science with a specialization
in Environmental Studies at Michigan State and was named the “Outstanding
Senior” of her graduating Political Science class. While interning with the
Sierra Club, she earned experience with grassroots and event organizing,
legislative analysis, lobbying, and issue research. She worked for Senator
Feingold’s 2010 campaign and Senator Stabenow’s campaign. She was a lead
volunteer with Green Corps organizer Michaela Howard on the MSU Beyond Coal
Campaign.
Ksenia Konkina, University of Chicago
Ksenia majored in Environmental Studies at
University of Chicago. She was the president of the University’s Vegan Society,
a member of the Green Campus Initiative, and the Animal Ambassador for No More
Homeless Pets in Utah. She worked on
farms around Italy as a volunteer for World Wide Opportunities on Organic
Farms. Ksenia has also spent time as an officer of Teen Advocates
against Tobacco.
Heather Kryczka, Washington University in St. Louis
At Washington University in St. Louis, Heather
majored in Environmental Studies with a Social Studies focus and minors in
Writing and International Studies. She interned as a journalist for the
Naperville Sun and spent her last summer researching environmental justice with
the Washington University Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic. She was a
Powershift organizer for Green Action and a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
Tia Lebherz, UC Santa Cruz
Tia majored in Environmental Studies at University
of California, Santa Cruz. She has interned as an executive assistant,
campaigns assistant and a member of the communications team at Pesticide Action
Network, North America. She has also worked at Life Lab Science Classroom in
Santa Cruz, as an outdoor educator teaching children about sustainable
agriculture.
Christopher Linsmayer, Amherst College
Christopher studied Environmental Studies at
Amherst College. He worked as a land conservation and finance intern at The
Nature Conservancy. He served as the head of the Archery and Sports Department
at Geneva Glen Camp. Christopher also played soccer at Amherst.
Kathleen Margillo, Duke University
While at Duke, Kathleen majored in Environmental
Sciences and Policy and minored in Political Science and Chemistry. She was an
undergraduate researcher for Meyer Laboratory, where she researched
neurodegeneration. She also participated in a semester-long Global Health study
abroad program in Costa Rica. In her spare time, Kathleen was an ESOL tutor and
camp counselor for FEMMES.
William Mathewson, Ithaca College
William was a Park Scholar and graduated with
degrees in Journalism and History from Ithaca College. He examined tropical
ecosystems in Belize and served as a Campus Chapter Member of Habitat for
Humanity. As the Director of Communication in the Student Government
Association, he helped draft a proposal to implement a shuttle system on
campus. William wrote for Buzzsaw magazine,
was on men’s varsity crew, and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta History Honors
Society.
Andrew Mayersohn, Yale University
Andrew graduated with a degree in Political Science
from Yale. He was a campaign intern for Tom Perriello for Congress and a policy
intern for Avoided Deforestation Partners. Andrew was also the Treasurer of the
Yale Fair Trade Alliance and has conducted research as an environmental justice
program intern for DataCenter.
Adam Reaves, Appalachian State University
Adam earned a MA in Political Science after double
majoring in Anthropology, and Philosophy and Religion at Appalachian State
University. He worked with Appalachian and the Community Together, where he
helped develop community-based research projects, contributed and edited an
online monthly newsletter, and undertook a number of environmental research
projects.
Emily Reuman, Bryn Mawr College
At Bryn Mawr College, Emily majored in Political
Science with a concentration in Environmental Studies. She was an environmental
policy fellow at Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority. She also
interned at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and for Parliamentarians for
Global Action. Emily was the president of Bryn Mawr's Environmental Club.
Ari Rubenstein, Brown University
Ari majored in Hispanic Language and Linguistics at
Brown. As the executive director of emPOWER Brown, he led a network of
organizations working on a variety of environmental campaigns, projects, and
events. He was a founding member of the Beyond the Bottle Campaign. Ari also
served on the Leadership Committee of Brown's first-year advising program, as
musical director of the Brown Derbies all-male a cappella group, and taught
seventh grade math and English for two summers with Providence
Summerbridge.
Mara Schechter, Georgetown University
While at Georgetown, Mara majored in Sociology and
wrote a thesis about online activism and the local food movement. She
co-founded the on-campus organic compost garden, was on the board of the
environmental club Eco-Action, and was a member of the community service
fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. She worked as an editorial intern for The
Environmental Magazine, a communications intern for The Wilderness Society,
and a food and agriculture media/communications intern for the Worldwatch
Institute.
Virginia Shannon, Middlebury College
At Middlebury, Virginia received a joint degree in
Environmental Studies and Biology and a minor in Studio Art. She studied
environmental history and culture in New Zealand and participated as a research
assistant in the biology department of her school. Virginia has been a camp
counselor at numerous organizations and was the captain of the squash and
lacrosse teams.
Patrick Stelmach, UC Berkeley
At Berkeley, Patrick received a dual-degree in
Political Science and Society and Environment. He was the Field Director of two
city council campaigns and an Online Organizer for a San Francisco mayor
campaign. Patrick was also a community advocate with Greenaction for Health and
Environmental Justice helping residents stop air pollution from a steel
foundry.
Savannah Sullivan, Oberlin College
Savannah studied Economics, Environmental Studies
and Chemistry at Oberlin College. She was the Sustainability Intern for the
City of Oberlin and co-authored the Climate Action Plan. She has worked as the
Greenhouse Gas Program Aide for the Department of Energy, a policy and
wilderness ranger intern for the U.S. Forest Service, and a research &
development lab technician for the Shepherd Chemical Company. She also served
as the student co-chair of the Oberlin College Committee on Environmental
Sustainability.
Jane Wiedenbeck, Wesleyan University
Jane was a Biology major at Wesleyan. She
participated in a semester-long ecology program in Ecuador and conducted an
independent research project on Woolly Monkey ranging behavior in the Amazon.
Jane was a Wesleyan Writing Program Senior Thesis Mentor and choreographed
dances for Terpsichorps Dance Troupe.
Tori Wong, University of Mary Washington
Tori graduated with a double major in Environmental
Science and Communication, with a minor in Sustainable Development from the
University of Mary Washington. As the co-president of the Ecology Club, she organized
environmental awareness campaigns such as the Light Bulb Exchange Program,
No-Shower November, and Green on the Screen film festival. Tori was the
Sustainability Coordinator for her university and an environmental education
teacher at St. Barnabas Primary School.
Macy Zander, Texas Christian University
Macy graduated with a double degree in Environmental Science and Political Science from Texas Christian University. She participated in environment and sustainability study abroad programs in both Australia and Costa Rica. She was the president of the TCU Environmental Club and a member of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. She participated in Model UN, was a mentor and facilitator for freshmen, a member of several honors societies, and a part of the TCU swim team. Macy also interned for The Dorothy Marcille Wood Foundation and for a local Australian government's environmental policy branch.
