Profile: Bessie Schwarz

Growing up in South Orange, New Jersey, Bessie Schwarz’s Garden State background led to her love for the environment. She pursued this passion at Carleton College in Minnesota, where she studied philosophy with an environmental studies concentration.

On campus Bessie was the leader of the Environmental Advisory Committee and helped found the Sustainability Revolving Fund. Her work led to the distribution of $40,000 toward campus energy-saving projects. This fund was adopted as part of a larger strategy to fight global warming on the Carleton College campus.

With Green Corps, Bessie is taking her campus activism to a new level. As a field organizer with National Wildlife Federation in Tallahassee, Florida, Bessie is recruiting hundreds of students on multiple campuses to make global warming a priority issue for presidential candidates during the fall election.

"Green Corps has been an incredible learning experience.  In just one year, I have gained important leadership skills, hands-on experience in the field, and a long-term vision for environmental change."
